Oscar ’dos made easy

Tips on re-creating the red carpet’s best hairstyle looks

Anyone who admired the fashion and beauty at the 81st Academy Awards earlier this week may have noticed a return to elegance and glamour, reminiscent of old Hollywood.

This was especially evident in hair styles, says Terry Ritcey, Redken Canada’s director of education and events.

This year there was a feeling of retro, of Hollywood starlets, he says, adding that there were more up ’dos and pulled back looks on the red carpet than ever before.

“This was a great year for hair at the Oscars,” he says. “Hollywood's sophistication and glamour came through. There were few missteps and the hair styles complimented the dresses creating an overall effect of elegance.”

For best hair, Ritcey thinks it was a tie between Kate Winslet and Angelina Jolie.

“Kate’s sculpted look was a perfect balance to the refined Yves St. Laurent dress which allowed her hair, and her minimalist jewellery to complete the overall look of glamour,” he explains. “Angelina’s Elie Saab dress was the perfect match to her flowing waves and pulled back softness — providing a wonderful frame for her face, and a canvas for her jewellery.”

Another ’do that caught Ritcey’s eye was Evan Rachel Wood's ’40s-inspired wave and set curl. He suggests this for a unique look, but warns that you should always take into consideration the dress when deciding the hair style. “It's important to find balance.”

Meanwhile, the worst hair award goes to Jessica Biel. “The softness she was trying to achieve perhaps went a bit flat,” says Ritcey.

For anyone looking to recreate some of this year’s best red carpet hair styles, Redken offers these tips:

Kate Winslet:
Up swept and away from the face with volume blending into a low sculpture in the nape area.

Lightly back comb to create fullness on top of head and move into a low nape forming sculpture using finishing spray to lock in a firm finish.

Anne Hathaway: Side swept elegant low chignon with volume.

Blow dry hair with straightening balm for a sleek silky finish. Pin into a low ponytail, lightly tease for volume and pin into a loose chignon. Maximizing the volume of the chignon. Finish with super strength finishing spray for a frizz free, lasting finish.

Penelope Cruz:
Sleek elegant up-do with face framing fringe.

Blow dry hair with blow-dry lotion. Pin hair up in a secure up-do creating smoothness and volume in the back area of the head, maximizing volume and fullness. Finish with shine spray for a lightweight glam finish.

Angelina Jolie: Elegant half-up away from the face style with soft texture.

Use a heat-active texturizer to create texture and definition. Pin hair up and away from the face leaving half of the hair down. Spray hair with ironing spray. Curl with large barrel curling iron to create long lasting memory and texture.

Taraji P. Henson: Side swept, face framing bob with sleek volume.

Blow dry hair with volume spray foam for flexible fullness and bold style. Spray on straightening spray and follow with a flat iron for silky shiny straightness.
