Park upgrades may cost $450 million

Major upgrades could put the Glenmore and Foothills Athletic Parks on the national sport map but it could cost up to $450 million over 10 years, if approved.

Major upgrades could put the Glenmore and Foothills Athletic Parks on the national sport map but it could cost up to $450 million over 10 years, if approved.

Shelly Shea, manager for arenas for the city, is lobbying for the major upgrades she says are desperately needed at the city’s two premiere inner-city parks.

“Both of the arenas are pushing 40 to 50-years-old and the upgrades are very much needed. We can’t really hold off much longer so I’d like council to discuss it before the summer,” Shea said.

Shea said upgrades include creating multi-sport facilities that could be used on the national and international level as well as upgrades to the arenas, pools, tracks and overall facilities at both parks.

“We know users and sports groups are very supportive of the renovations and we haven’t heard from anyone who doesn’t want it,” Shea said.

Shea is hoping to generate more dialogue among aldermen and the community before the summer break.

“Even if we waited and were six months behind it would be a lot of catching up,” she said.
