Patch fired hundreds of employees over conference call. Credit: Patch Ever felt like you were just a cog in the corporate machine? Former Patch employees can relate. Hale Global, the new owner of the local news website, laid off hundreds of employees during a conference call on Wednesday. Leigh Zarelli Lewis, COO of Patch, said on the call: "Hale Global has decided which Patch employees will receive an offer of employment to move forward in accordance with their vision for Patch and which will not. Unfortunately, your role has been eliminated and you will no longer have a role at Patch and today will be your last day of employment with the company." AOL handed off Patch to Hale Global earlier this month. Romenesko obtained a recording of the call.
This isn't the first time Patch employees have been laid off over conference call. AOL CEO Tim Armstrong laid off 300 people on an all-staff conference call in August as well.
Brian Farnham, former editor-in-chief at Patch, wrote a sympathetic note on Facebook to his former colleagues.
