Player’s U.S. plans don’t deter Titan

The Bathurst Titan are gambling on Jacob Brennan.

The Titan used a fifth-round pick (84th overall) in the QMJHL draft in Drummondville, Que., to take the Hammonds Plains native, who was ranked in the first round (18th overall).

Brennan, who played for the Halifax major midgets last season, didn’t attend the draft because he notified teams prior to the event he plans to go the U.S. college route. That’s why he slipped.

“I (called him after the draft and) told him we’ll wait and if he’s not coming, he’s not coming,” said Titan general manager Sylvain Couturier. “I’m not going to put any pressure on the kid. We respect his decision to go to college, but if it doesn’t work out, he’ll always be welcome in Bathurst.”

Brennan was ranked second among goaltenders after Francis Tremblay, who went fourth overall to the Val-d’Or Foreurs. He went 13-2 with a five shutouts and a 1.83 goals-against average last season.
