Three people were found dead inside a luxury Edgewater, New Jersey high-rise apartment building in what authorities said late Friday appeared to be a murder-suicide.

Authorities in Bergen County said investigators believe a man shot and killed his wife and daughter. Police discovered the bodies on Christmas after the family, identified as Michael Stasko, 53, his wife, Melissa, 49, and their daughter, Nellie, 8, failed to show up at a family gathering in Missouri.

The motive was not known.

"We don't know whether it was financial, we don't know whether it was familial," Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said at a news conference late on Friday.

The bodies were found inside an apartment at the Windsor at Mariners, a luxury residential building on the Hudson River, facing New York City, authorities said.

The deaths might have occurred days ago, Molinelli said.

According to, Stasko was found with a gunshot wound in his head. Melissa Stasko and Nellie Stasko suffered gun shot wounds to the back of their heads, Molinelli said. Authorities believe the shootings happened while the mother and daughter were asleep — both were dressed in pajamas — and on Tuesday, the girl's birthday.

Police recovered a .45-caliber handgun with hollow-point bullets in the apartment and suspect Stasko muffled the sounds of the shootings with loud music.
