Province to continue funding homeless shelters

The B.C. government will continue to fund three homeless shelters that were on the brink of shutting down.

The Homeless Emergency Action Team (HEAT) shelters had been set to close at the end of the month, but Housing Minister Rich Coleman allotted $8 million to keep the shelters open until as late as 2013. Four other winter emergency shelters will close by the end of April.

“The HEAT shelters have helped people living on the street find stability in their lives,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson in a statement. “It’s crucial that they remain open as we build new social housing partnerships with the province.”
