Rainmen have their eye on ‘high-level’ players, more cuts coming

The make-up of the Halifax Rainmen should be clearer today.

Team owner Andre Levingston said yesterday four players were to be released last night following a week-long training camp in Yarmouth. Levingston also said they’re in negotiations with “a couple of big kids” who are “extremely high-level overseas players.”

Levingston wouldn’t reveal names, but said they’ve been talking to both players for about three weeks, and is hoping he could announce either — or both — as signings today.

As for who is getting cut, Levingston wouldn’t tip his hand, saying the information would be released today. But he did say some of the players getting cut are players who were expected to play big roles for the Premier Basketball League club.

“We brought some guys in here to play certain roles and penciled them in as starters and they really had a bad training camp,” Levingston said.

The week-long camp in Yarmouth ended Saturday with a blue and white game, which Team White won 114-90 thanks to 31 points by Adris DeLeon and 27 points from Tony Bennett. Eric Crookshank netted 18.

Gordie Malone poured in 29 points to lead Team Blue. Garry Gallimore added 24, while Jevohn Shepherd and Desmond Ferguson each netted 15.

Levingston said the team will now conduct its training camp in Halifax, with practices taking place this week at the University of King’s College gymnasium.
