Six people killed in a tragic head-on collision near Golden belonged to two families travelling to Abbotsford from Edmonton, RCMP said Monday.

Driver inattention or fatigue likely caused the 1998 green Dodge Caravan to drift into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a large eastbound motorhome at 11:35 a.m. on Sunday, said Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

The 47-year-old driver of the minivan, his wife and their two daughters, aged 15 and 13, and their visiting grandfather died. The family’s 11-year-old son was travelling in a second car with family friends and was unharmed. A 14-year-old family friend also died in the minivan. Only two of the four victims were wearing seatbelts, police said.

Media reports in Alberta identified the victims as Arshad Mahmood, his wife Shakila and their two teenaged daughters.

The accident occurred on the Trans-Canada Highway about 20 kilometres east of Golden. Two people in the motorhome were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
