The FBI reportedly is investigating potential extortion by the former Rutgers University men's basketball assistant who went public with video showing coaches verbally and physically abusing players during practices.
The FBI has visited the office of now-former athletic director Tim Pernetti as part of the investigation into whether Eric Murdock first sought to extort Rutgers, the New York Times reports.
An attorney representing Murdock sent a letter to Rutgers in December seeking payment of $950,000. Murdock eventually publicized a video showing now-former head coach Mike Rice throwing basketballs at his players, screaming obscenities, even once using a homophobic slur, and shoving and pushing them.
Rice was fired last Wednesday — one day after ESPN's "Outside the Lines" aired the video footage.
Pernetti resigned Friday after public pressure mounted due to his initial handling of the coach's behavior. He suspended and fined Rice in December after being provided the shocking video.
Murdock, a former NBA player, filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against Rutgers and several school officials Friday.
