Golf rock star Rory McIlroy revealed Monday he had suffered a severe ankle injury while playing soccer with his buddies and some fans reacted with words like "stupid" and "idiot."

On Instagram, where McIlroy, 26, went public, fans offered a mix of "get well soon" wishes and insults. Here's a sampling:

coop_daddy: "You're a professional athlete! The sport can't afford one of its best getting hurt doing stupid s--t. You never saw Tiger getting hurt playing a game of 2-hand touch."

alstonspears "Smooth move dumbass!"

stevethomascarter "Hey @rorymcilroy  leave Soccer to the @uswnt they are the bosses!"

McIlroy suffered a total rupture of his ATFL -- the anterior talofibular ligament and the one most commonly sprained -- in his left ankle.

His spokesman said at the very least, he is out of the Scottish Open, which starts Thursday.

"Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day," McIlroy wrote. "Rehab already started. ... Working hard to get back as soon as I can."

McIlroy's injury comes the same weekend as another sports great's career-damaging injury: Star New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul injured his hand in a Fourth of July fireworks display gone horribly wrong.
