Ryan Jenkins story draws attention to domestic violence

A local agency is warning the domestic violence situation in Calgary is severe.

The story of 32-year-old Ryan Jenkins has been making headlines around the world and drawing attention to domestic violence.

Wanted for the murder of his wife in California, Jenkins was found dead of an apparent suicide in a B.C. motel room.

While the media coverage has been intense, RCMP say these situations aren’t rare and an agency that tries to combat domestic violence says another death could happen at any time.

“These women and children are at risk of losing their lives,” said Arlene Adamson about the many Calgary families seeking help from the YWCA. “We need to recognize this is front page, yes it’s a Hollywood story, but it’s Calgary [as well], this lives here every single day.”

Adamson says demand for help is increasing and a lack of resources is forcing the YWCA to turn people away.
