An alleged thief was twice taken down by Vancouver police dogs in less than one week.

On Aug. 15, police dog Hondo, 3, found a man hiding in the bushes with a coffee maker shortly after a Starbucks in the Tyne and Kingsway area was robbed, Const. Howard Chow said yesterday.

Four days later, police dog Bear chased a suspect attempting to flee police on a bicycle after a “smash and grab” attempt at a closed liquor store at Nelson and Beatty streets. Bear, 7, knocked the man off the bike and police promptly apprehended him. The same man was arrested on both occasions.

Danny Lawrence Smith, 40, of Vancouver faces several theft-related charges.
