TORONTO - Sarah Thomson is dropping out of the race to be Toronto's next mayor and throwing her support behind former deputy premier George Smitherman.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Thomson said she is ending her campaign and asking people to support Smitherman.

Thomson says Smitherman is a viable and responsible option.

She also says he's an alternative to the “message of anger” trying to make its way into city hall.

Rob Ford is the frontrunner in the mayoral race according to recent public opinion polls.

The election is set for Oct. 25.
