Sex assault suspect sketched

Suspect

Ottawa police have now put a face to the man they believe brutally beat and raped a 24-year-old Carleton University student on campus earlier this month.

Police released a composite sketch of the suspect yesterday in hopes that the public will help to identify him. Completed Wednesday, the sketch is based on a description the victim gave of her attacker.

Police have to date received 40 tips from the public that they are still investigating, said Ottawa Police Constable Al Boucher. But investigators still need the public’s help both in identifying the suspect and to recover property stolen during the commission of the offence, he said.

On September 1, a woman was working alone in a science lab on the third floor of the Steacie Building at Carleton University when a man beat and sexually assaulted her.

“The victim suffered serious injuries as a result,” said Boucher, who added that the victim has since left hospital and is resting at home.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 20s, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9 tall, clean-shaven and bald with broad shoulders. He spoke unaccented English and had been drinking. At the time of the attack, he wore a blue hoodie sweatshirt with small white lettering on the chest, jeans, and running shoes and carried a plastic bag from Macy’s.

During a press conference yesterday, Inspector John Gardiner appealed for the suspect to come forward.

“We don’t want you out there,” said Gardiner.

Added Boucher, “We understand he has problems he’s got to deal with, but we’re asking that he turn himself in to us.”
