Slick streets cause havoc for commuters

Drivers were slip, sliding away on some HRM highways yesterday morning.

The Halifax RCMP say slick road conditions during the morning commute resulted in 15 collisions over a period of a couple of hours. Most of the crashes took place on Highway 102, 118 and Lower Sackville areas.

There were no injuries, but damage was done to several vehicles.

“It was kind of deceiving – it looked nice out in some areas,” said Halifax RCMP spokesman Cpl. Joe Taplin, adding the wet weather from the previous day froze in some parts and made for a tricky commute to work. “Drivers were probably lulled into a false sense of security.”

The RCMP is reminding the public the winter driving season is now upon us and caution is needed on the roads and highways – even when everything may look A-OK. A tip from Taplin is “if there is frost on your windows, there’s frost on the road.”
