At least three people, including two children, were missing after a small plane crashed into two houses in East Haven, Connecticut, the town's Deputy Fire Chief Tony Moscato said on Friday.

"At this point we believe there might have been two children in one of the homes," he said, adding the pilot was the third person believed missing. "The search is ongoing."

Moscato said investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration had arrived on the scene in East Haven, just east of New Haven and about 40 miles south of Hartford.

The propeller plane crashed at about 11:25 a.m. as it was approaching Tweed New Haven Airport in rainy weather.

Images of the incident posted to Twitter showed flames and smoke rising from between two homes.
