Smoking in cars with kids banned in Leduc

Come next July, it will be illegal for drivers in Leduc to smoke in cars while children are in the vehicle.

Come next July, it will be illegal for drivers in Leduc to smoke in cars while children are in the vehicle.

The city passed a bylaw Monday that calls for a $100 fine if motorists are caught lighting up when minors are along for the ride.

The penalty jumps to $200 if they’re caught a second time.

Dr. Gerry Predy, Alberta’s senior medical health officer, says he would like to see more communities in the province follow Leduc’s initiative.

Predy says the space inside a car is so small that opening a window doesn’t make much difference in the amount of smoke kids are exposed to.
