South Philly dog passes sniff test

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA. The broccoli rabe and sharp provolone on the new South Philly Dog offered at Citizens Bank Park hold up to the highest standards — the Italian Market itself.

The two hot dogs Metro took to Villa Di Roma on South Ninth Street yesterday during the Phillies’ home opener passed the taste test of the Italian Market restaurant’s third-generation owner and his wait staff.

“This is good, honestly,” said Frank DeLuca, whose family has been part of the Italian Market since 1910. “South Philly would be proud to have this named after it. They didn’t skimp on the rolls, which is important. The broccoli and provolone are good. You can’t go wrong with these ingredients.”

The specialty dog, created along with two others by Aramark executive chef Glenn Richmond as part of a contest to see which one fans would like to have offered at games this season, is not easy to find inside the ballpark. It’s only offered at one small middle-of-the-concourse stand at Section 125.
