Four Calgarian Special Olympic athletes got a hero’s farewell from dozens of friends and family members as they made their way through the departure gate yesterday at the Calgary Airport.

Alyssa Hatton, an alpine skier, along with three other athletes, Ambyr Lindon, an alpine skier, Shane Stewart, a cross-country skier, and Katie Saunders, a speed skater, exited followed by a marching band to send them off to a competition in Boise, Idaho.

“It just kinda brings a lump to your throat,” said Debbie Hatton, Alyssa’s mom.

Alyssa began skiing nine years ago despite having sight in only one eye and limited fine motor skills in her right hand.
