Steve Jobs dies at 56 of pancreatic cancer

According to a press release issued by Apple’s Board, Steve Jobs has passed away. He was 56 years old.

Jobs co-founded the computer, media and electronics giant with Steve Wozniak in 1976 but left eight years later, returning in 1996 to reinvigorate Apple and bring about a string of successful innovations, including the iMac personal computer, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. His health a matter of public concern for years, Jobs underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2004. After leaves of absence for medical reasons in 2009 — during which he received a liver transplant — and earlier this year, Jobs officially resigned on August 24, stating in a letter at the time that he could “no longer meet [his] duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO.”

Following the news of his death, the Apple homepage read:

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost
an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to
know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring
mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and
his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.
