Students take short end of holiday stick

The holidays are usually when most people relax, take time off work, and not think about the office.

The holidays are usually when most people relax, take time off work, and not think about the office.

But for many young people like Marita Cockburn, the holidays mean more shifts and extra cash.

The American Apparel employee will be working on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day to earn more money, but her co-worker Erin will be going out of town for Christmas.

“I wouldn’t want her to be stuck here because I refuse to work on Christmas Eve out of convenience,” said Cockburn.

Cash-strapped students also jump at the chance to earn extra cash when not in class.

“I finished exams last week so I’m working more on holidays to get more pocket money,” said Tusmo Mohamed.

Justin Louie, 25, feels he has no choice but to work over the holidays.

“When you’re management, you have to work a lot more around this time of year,” he said.

“Obviously, relaxing would be a lot better,” he added.
