Stylein worldwide

Celebration is in order for designer Elin Nystrom.

Celebration is in order for designer Elin Nystrom. At the tradeshow Rendez-Vous, she’s just gotten word that Oak NYC — the fashion-forward retailer that carries cutting-edge brands such as Complex Geometries and Alexander Wang — snagged pieces from the spring/summer collection of her label Stylein (Suite Orchard, RevolveClothing.com and Fred Segal will also carry her line). “Tonight, I’m going to drink champagne,” beams the 29-year-old. As she should. Getting picked up by popular stores is quite a feat for an indie brand — especially for one based in Gothenburg, Sweden.

But Nystrom is no stranger to challenges. She was a competitive gymnast until the age of 18, when an injury convinced her to quit the sport and move to New York. There she fell into styling photo shoots (hence the brand’s name) before enrolling into Fashion Institute of Technology on a whim.

“I wasn’t one of those kids who, like, made clothes for my dolls,” says Nystrom, who studied the U.S. design scene for two years before moving back to Sweden to grow the brand. “I found New York to be a very creative city. Nowadays I go back to that state of mind [that] everything is possible.”

This “everything is possible” attitude translates to her clothes: Stylein is a line of chic, simple statement pieces constructed with clean lines and beautiful fabrics like silk, items that a girl could easily dress up with high heels and red lips or make edgy by throwing on some boots and a leather jacket.

“I don’t want to take over a client’s personality; I want to inspire it, instead,” insists Nystrom, who creates the line with the aid of two other designers.
