Japanese officials yesterday canceled one of the country’s largest sumo competitions after claims some fighters had been bribed to throw fights.

The decision comes just days after three fighters admitted they had fixed bouts by cell phone — the first time an active fighter has confirmed long-held suspicions that some sumo bouts were fixed.

Eleven other fighters have been implicated in the scandal, but deny their involvement.

A tournament, due to be held in Osaka from March 13, has been called off in what the sport’s managing association described as the ‘darkest chapter’ in the sport’s 1,500-year history.
