Suspect’s arraignment held over till tomorrow

An Edmonton man facing a variety of charges including sexual assault following an incident at a downtown hotel over the weekend made a brief appearance in Halifax provincial court yesterday.

Andrew Norman Wilson — casually dressed in a T-shirt and grey corduroys —showed little emotion as the judge announced his arraignment had been held over until tomorrow.

The 21-year-old never spoke as the early afternoon proceeding wrapped up in under a minute.

Wilson is facing charges of sexual assault, aggravated assault, forcible confinement, choking and unlawfully entering a dwelling after an incident at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel on Hollis Street early Saturday morning.

Halifax Regional Police say an American couple had just checked into the hotel when the woman left to get something from a vending machine.

It was then police say the woman was confronted by a man who began sexually assaulting her.

In an effort to escape, police say the woman convinced the man to take her back to her room, where she yelled for her husband.

Police say the man then began assaulting the husband, while the woman went to the front desk for help.

Officers arrived on scene and after conducting a search of the hotel, police say the suspect was found in the hallway on the fourth floor.

He was arrested without incident.

The judge remanded Wilson back to the Burnside jail yesterday pending his next court appearance. Wilson, a military engineer stationed at CFB Edmonton, has been in jail since being arrested.

Police say the female victim in this incident wasn’t injured, but was shaken from the ordeal. Her husband suffered minor cuts and bruises.
