Segovia – Old World Spanish Dishes
5 Saint Nicholas St.

Rating: 1111/2
Dinner for two with drinks: $65

Segovia is at Yonge and Wellesley. This Spanish restaurant has been here for over 20 years, but tucked away down a narrow lane, you may just have missed it.

The brightly coloured interior is lively and jarring. Festive with pottered plates and a yellow-and-black mural of bull fighting, it’s definitely old world in here, but welcoming.

Their signature dishes are special tapas and paellas. To begin, creamy, crunchy Crab Croquetas and Green Mussels Tomato Diablo ($10.50/dish) come out of the kitchen quickly and superbly cooked, though the supple fresh mussels lack spicy heat.

The Paella Mixta ($45) is a combination of saffron rice cooked with fish of the day, scallops, squid, shrimp, chicken, chorizo & mussels. The fish — basa and cod — along with the other seafood is again, done to perfection. Funnily enough, it’s the chicken and chorizo that’s a bit overcooked.

Our server dishes out portions of the paella straight from the pan on a cart he wheels over to each table. You definitely get your money’s worth here as we stumbled to finish our own plates and brought the other half home. Go old school every now and then — it’s the real deal.
