Suspect charged with drunk-driving

A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a teenage cyclist Tuesday night.

Gatineau Police received a call about a hit-and-run in front of 80 Greber Blvd. at about 9:50 p.m.

Gatineau Police Const. Isabelle Poirier said police officers arrived at the scene to find a Hyundai had been hit. No injuries were reported from this collision. While on scene, police received another call about a collision involving a vehicle of the same description as the first incident.

Police said the suspect vehicle, a GMC pickup truck, was continuing along Lady Aberdeen Bridge when it struck a Mazda, causing minor injuries to two people.

After striking the car, police report the pickup truck continued for another 50 metres, where it drove onto the sidewalk and struck a 17-year-old female who was cycling in the bike lane.

The victim, a Gatineau resident, was taken to hospital where she died from her injuries. The deceased’s name is being withheld at the request of the family.

Police report a 51-year-old man faces charges driving under the influence of alcohol causing death. He was scheduled to appear in Gatineau court yesterday.

Police are continuing the investigation.
