The best and worst of celebrity gossip in 2008

It’s a sex, sleaze and crack cocaine cocktail! Join us as Metro looks back at the (literal and figurative) highs and lows of celebrity gossip in 2008.

Bumping uglies Lindsay Lohan kissed a girl and she liked it. Surely the height of celebrity courtship was the unexpected romance between the post-rehab flickering starlet and English DJ Samantha Ronson. Following months of speculation, Lohan confirmed their affinity in September, to the disapproval of her famously temperamental father Michael. The love bug also bit alluring actress Scarlett Johansson and Vancouver’s Ryan Reynolds, who got hitched in the city in May. And, in less monogamous meandering, Madonna celebrated 50 big ones by laying a big one on Yankee Alex Rodriguez. He maintains they’re just friends. But Madge’s alleged baseball fling may have precipitated her divorce from British filmmaker Guy Ritchie. The couple split after eight years in October.

Rehab revelations Ex-X-Files star David Duchovny’s wife, actress Tea Leoni, tried to make him go to rehab … and he willingly obliged. His coincidental admittance for sex addiction (which bears striking similarity to his oversexed writer character on Showtime’s Californication) was the first in a series of unexpected celebrity rehab visits. Eva Mendes checked into a Utah facility in February once frequented by Lindsay Lohan, and was later joined by Spider-Man’s Kirsten Dunst. Melrose Place alumnus Heather Locklear wasn’t far behind. She was admitted in June, but her month-long stay didn’t prevent her from being charged with a DUI in September.

Mini me’s Joining the ranks of Apple Blythe Alison Martin and Moon Unit Zappa this year were a host of celebrity babies whose parents only wish to inflict formative peer trauma on their little ones. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban brought us daughter Sunday Rose Kidman Urban in July, while Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s second boy, Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale, arrived in August. The out-of-nowhere award goes to 17-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears and fiancé Casey Aldridge, who gave us Maddie Briann Aldrige in June, while the saw-it-coming award belongs to Brangelina and their twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline Jolie Pitt, who graced us in July.

Getting better For once, Britney Spears didn’t do it again! In 2008, the singer regained visitation rights to her children, glowingly guest-starred on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother, and won three MTV Video Music and two MTV Europe Music Awards. Her single Womanizer, from her new album Circus, reached top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 – her first No. 1 since her debut album.
