The world’s top five music festival picks

If Canadian Music Week left you wanting more this year, consider festival-hopping this summer.

Metro found five summer music festivals to leave you satisfied.

1. Coachella, California, USA
The epitome of hippie chic, the Coachella festival near Palm Springs, is two days of sunshine, sustainabilty and sound. Carpooling is advised and camping is the way forward. Rock up in your RV, pitch a tent or book one of the few luxury safari tents that come with air conditioning, a couch and a golf buggy to get you to and from the stages.

2010 dates
April 16-18

Expected Line Up
David Guetta, Jay-Z, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Corinne Bailey Rae, Gorillaz, Vampire Weekend, Gossip, The Dead Weather Phoenix

How do I get there?
Palm Springs International Airport and then renting a car/carpooling (coachella.com)

2. Rock in Rio, Lisbon
Rotating between Rio, Madrid, and Lisbon, 2010 takes you to the latter. Held in Lisbon’s Bela Vista Park, it’s mainly the special stages you should be on the lookout for here. Head to the sunset or electronic stage and make sure you attend at least one of the improvised jam sessions.

2010 dates
May 21-27

Expected Line Up
Miley Cyrus and John Mayer

How do I get there?
Bela Vista Park is a mere 15-minute walk from Lisbon airport.

3. Glastonbury, United Kingdom
Possibly the most star-studded festival, “Glasto” is as much of a fashion and scenester spot as it is music. Kate Moss, Lily Allen, Jay-Z and Alexa Chung are regulars and although that time of year is often plagued by rainy spells, a good raincoat and a sturdy pair of plastic boots on your feet is all you need.

2010 dates
June 23-27

Expected Lineup
U2, Stevie Wonder, Jack Johnson, Muse

How do I get there?
Bristol International Airport is best

4. Roskilde, Denmark
The Nordic festival is not only a non-profit organization (all profits go to a designated cause) there’s also free camping along with your ticket purchase. Go to the website to suggest or apply some of the festival’s green tips. What’s more is the food stalls mainly sell local and organic produce.

2010 dates
July 1-4

Expected Lineup
Jack Johnson, Muse

How do I get there?
You are 35 kilometres from Copenhagen

5 Benicassim, Spain
Wedged between Barcelona and Valencia is Costa de Azaha, whose prisitine beaches turn into the dance floors of Spain’s biggest music festivals. More of an excuse to soak up the sun and swim in the sea, Benicassim’s amazing nightlife has led it to gain a reputation as the wild child of summer festivals.

2010 dates
July 15-18

Expected Lineup
The Prodigy, Kaabian, Dizzee Rascal

How do I get there?
Valencia airport is about one hour away
