Theater gets a breath of fresh air in the park

Sure, theaters on the Great White Way may have air conditioning, but they can’t boast the gorgeous ambience of a summer day in the park. That’s why the cast of “STOMP” — along with the stars of “Promises, Promises,” “In the Heights” and “Nunsense” — will perform some of their shows’ best-known numbers outdoors to kick off the 10th annual Broadway in Bryant Park lunchtime series, hosted by 106.7 Lite FM.

“It’s kind of like a little jam that happens. You could be just walking past, and you just happen to see it,” says “STOMP” rehearsal director, former performer, and original cast member Fiona Wilkes of the series.

“People get away from the office for their lunchtime; there are families there, out on the lawn. It’s kind of like a big picnic.”

The series’ weekly performances — happening every Thursday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. through Aug. 12 — each feature different Broadway productions and are free.

And though Wilkes admits that “the weather’s [been] crazy” this week — she says today’s performance by her famous percussion troupe will most likely involve brooms, hands and feet rather than their signature metal trash can lids due to the recent heat wave — the temperature isn’t going to be the only thing making the audience sweat.

“It’s going to involve a lot of audience participation,” Wilkes says of the show. “We’re gonna make them work a little bit.”
