Tips to take a big slice out of Pisa

Compact, busy and with a no-brainer must-see, Pisa makes a superb destination for those looking for a little more form their spring break.

The brilliant white tower really does take your breath away but the city has so much more to offer.

MUST SEE

Piazza del Duomo
Basically the three other historical gems of the large, green field in the centre of Pisa. The cathedral, the baptistry and the cemetery are always destined to be a poor second best to the Leaning Tower despite them all being tourist draws in their own right. You’re at the tower anyway, so you may as well take a look.

MANGIA, MANGIA

Pizzeria La Buca
So you get to sit outside, with a view of the Leaning Tower, a selection of half-decent house reds and a genuinely fabulous pizza and change from $10. What’s not to like?

DESSERT
La Bottega del Gelato

If ice cream is something of an art form in Italy, then in Pisa it’s an obsession. Visit La Bottega del Gelato where the local students hang out and try the sublimely weird avocado ice cream.

WHERE TO STAY

Hotel Bologna
A 10-minute walk from the tower, this cool and well-priced hotel has 70 modern air-conditioned rooms and secluded patio garden for the sipping of the local Montecarlo wine.
Rooms start at $75.
