TTC chair rides into the sunset with advice

As he nears the end of his term at the TTC, outgoing transit commission chair Adam Giambrone has issued a swan song in the form of a YouTube video and a detailed, comprehensive report on the achievements of the system over the past five years, including recommendations for further improvements.

Called Moving Transit Forward, the video and report was produced with about $15,000 from the Davenport city councillor’s own budget — rather than at TTC expense.

It recommends the city invest millions on improving bus and streetcar transportation, implementing an open-payment fare system so riders can pay using a credit card or cellphone, and transforming the transit agency into a greener operation.

The video shows Giambrone entering a subway turnstile by swiping his BlackBerry on an electronic reader. The camera follows him as he types while sitting on the train — a scenario Giambrone recommends the TTC continue to pursue since there is no cell service in subway tunnels yet.

Key among his recommendations, though, is making surface transportation more efficient for the 700,000 riders who use buses and streetcars every day.

The report notes 70 per cent of subway users connect to surface transit.
