Two killed in Fourth Avenue hit-and-run accident

A 25-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man died after being struck in a hit-and-run on Fourth Avenue near Granville Island, Vancouver police said Saturday.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the fatal crash that occurred just before midnight on Saturday.

The couple were thrown several metres and died at the scene after they were struck from behind crossing Fourth Avenue at the entrance to Granville Island.

The driver of the Buick, an 18-year-old man, fled the scene on foot. He was tracked by a police dog and arrested. He remained in custody Sunday.

Two teenage girls, passengers in the car, were taken to police headquarters for questioning.
