Union blasts closure of truck stations

A union leader says the government is risking the safety of motorists by shutting down truck inspection centres on busy southern Ontario highways.

Warren (Smokey) Thomas of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union said the province is shutting down the safety stations in Fort Erie, Winona and Sarnia North.

He said ministry employees were told of the closures last week in a memo that said it was part of the plan to downsize the public service to slay Ontario’s massive deficit.

Thomas said closing the Fort Erie station close to the Canada-U.S. border is reckless and will allow trucks entering Canada to use back roads and highways to avoid inspection.
