United Way needs more, too

United Way Ottawa, still about $800,000 short of this year’s fundraising goal, is appealing to donors who haven’t yet made their holiday giving decisions.

So far, they’ve raised $32.3 million of a targeted $33.1 million, with record contributions this year from the Ottawa Catholic School Board and federal public servants.

“There’s a number of donors, frankly, who look towards the year end as the best time to make their contribution,” said Michael Allen, United Way Ottawa’s president and CEO. “So we’re following up with all those donors as well. So the work carries on. It’s just not quite as public as during our campaign time.”

New requests from community agencies for funding are up 40 per cent this year, he said.
