A police video that shows Gardena, California police officers fatally shooting an unarmed man in 2013 was released on Tuesday.
The officers mistook the fatally shot man, Ricardo Diaz-Zeferino, and others for robbery suspects. Diaz-Zeferino was out looking for his brother’s stolen bicycle with two others in June 2013.
The video was published by the Los Angeles Times after a federal judge ordered the release.
The video shows a man taking his hat off and lowering his hands before being shot eight times. The second man, Eutiquio Acevedo Mendez, was hit once in the back and has recovered from his injuries, the LA Times reports.
The ruling to release the video comes as more police departments equip officers with body cameras, including New York City.
Gardena Police Chief released a statement late Tuesday describing the shooting as tragic, while also continuing to oppose publicly releasing recordings for privacy reasons, the LA Times reports.
