As many as twenty people were injured when a platform collapsed at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Providence Sunday afternoon, The Providence Journal reported.
A video posted on YouTube apparently shows the shocking incident, which occurred at the Dunkin' Donuts Center during the 11 a.m. Providence circus performance.
Six performers were critically injured, and three others suffered non-life threatening injuries, Providence fire officials told NECN.
The performers fell from a height of 25 to 40 feet, according to police.
The Dunkin Donuts Center general manager said there were other injuries at the scene, but it is unclear if harm was done to other performers or civilians.
Roman Garcia, general manager of Ringling’s Legends tour, said in a news conference, “Everybody’s conscious. Everybody’s doing well. We ask everybody to pray for the girls.”
Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare said it was unclear exactly what happened, however media outlets are reporting that a high wire may have snapped during a hair-hanging act.
The show ended following the accident, and another show set for later this afternoon was cancelled.
