If anything, the debate over changing the name of Wellington Street to Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard is a great opportunity for people to learn more about both men.
People arguing about the proposal can agree on at least that.
“The community is learning a lot about its history and certainly the Duke of Wellington. Most people probably didn’t know who Wellington Street was named after,” said Bob Plamondon, author of Blue Thunder: The Truth about Conservatives from Macdonald to Harper, who proposed the renaming.
However, executive director of the Macdonald-Cartier Society Immanuel Giulea argued against the renaming, pointing out that there already is a Macdonald Street in Ottawa.
