The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their son George Alexander Louis, Kensington Palace has announced.
The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.
In total, there have been six King Georges who have reigned as British monarch since the German-born George I acceded to the throne in 1714. The last was the Queen’s father George VI who died in 1952; Elizabeth II’s grandfather was also George (George V).
George was the bookies favorite boys’ name with odds of 2/1.
William and Kate’s choice of all three names is an obvious tribute to royal predecessors, experts say.
“The name Louis pays homage to Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh-Prince Philip’s uncle,” Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine and author of “A Century of Royal Children”, told Metro. “Lord Mountbatten and William’s father, Prince Charles, were very close.”
[embedgallery id=189903] “Alexander recalls the first Alexander Cambridge in the royal family born in 1874,” said Seward. “His full name was Major-General Alexander Augustus Frederick William Alfred George Cambridge and he was a relative by marriage to Queen Victoria.
The newborn prince’s first name will be a crowd-pleaser for the general public, too, catering to their current tastes in baby names, a parenting expert told Metro.
“George is a very popular name in England, in the top 10 names for boys this year,” said Sarah Barrett from UK parenting advice BabyCentre.co.uk. “There is a real mix of royal tradition and mums’ favorite names here with George.”
The baby prince’s parentage of regal and commoner blood will be reflected in the name, too, added Barrett. “George means ‘Farmer’ or ‘Earth-worker’ – so he’ll be down-to-earth – while Alexander and Louis mean ‘To defend’ and ‘Famous warrior’, respectively – so he will have that strong, majestic quality as well.”
