What to wear

The beauty about Toronto’s local style scene is that it’s based on the individual. There isn’t a prototypical way of dressing here the way you might encounter in New York (lots of black), London (lots of eccentricity), Milan (lots of designer labels) or Paris (lots of chic classics). But if one were to try to pinpoint Toronto’s way of dressing it would be: relaxed, utilitarian, cosmopolitan and urban. Expect the guests at the city’s fashion shows to represent the best of this. If you’re looking to create a unique personal look of your own, we suggest you consider the following key items for autumn.

A day-to-night dress
Maje snakeskin-print dress, $340, www.netaporter.com

Leopard print might be all the rage in fashion right now, but snakeskin makes a more unique statement. Added bonus: Animal prints are pretty timeless, which means you can wear this strapless dress over and over and over again.

Easy, tailored trousers
Elizabeth and James, $275, www.shopbop.com

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s clothing line has developed a fierce following among fashion editors for their tailored, yet easy trousers and jackets. This pair is the perfect thing to run from show to show in.

A pair of statement boots
Chloé suede lace-up boots, $695, www.netaporter.com

These boots are surprisingly more versatile than they look and would work equally well with a mini-dress as a pair of tailored trousers.

Chic arm candy
Isharya bangles, $65, www.isharya.com

The Far East meets the city with these chic rhinestone bangles.
