The White House was placed on lockdown Friday afternoon after a man carrying two bags tried to scale the property’s security fence, the Secret Service said.
The suspected intruder was taken into custody by Park Police and Secret Service officers, NBC News reported.
A Secret Service official said authorities at the scene declared the bags “suspicious” and called the Metro Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Division to screen them, which is standard procedure in such situations.
President Barack Obama was not at the White house at the time of the incident.
