Wildlife adventures await

Instead of your home feeling like a zoo this summer, get the kids out to the Calgary Zoo for week-long fun and educational camps.

From July 5 to Aug. 20, children from pre-school (age four) to grade 12 can experience the zoo in ways everyday visitors don’t.

Zoo Tots (ages four to six) are half-day camps for $144. With this age group we “focus on a lot of things that younger kids really like, such as games, songs and a zoo tour,” says Zack Anderson, the Calgary Zoo continuing education program coordinator.

For the next age group (grades one to six) there is Discover the Zoo, Zoo Explorers ($249) or Art Camp ($269) available for the little ones to explore the sites, sounds and smells of the zoo throughout the summer during full day camps.

“We have lots of customers coming year after year,” says Anderson, explaining some camp goers progress through all the different levels of camps the zoo offers.

Anderson says the Youth Wildlife Workshop for Teens, grades seven to 12, is still a fun and exciting experience, but focuses more on conservation and enrichment projects compared to the younger camps.

These camps are $254 for grades seven to nine and $266.70 for grades 10 to 12.

“[The camps] really inspire people to make those simple life changes to help conserve wild areas and wild animals,” says Anderson.

The Zoo’s partnership with Between Friends Club enables children with disabilities to be full-integrated into the various camps available with all the other enrolled children.

All summer Zoo camp registration began Feb. 1 and Anderson says there’s still plenty of space. But, he does warn the pre-school camps fill up the fastest.

Go to www.calgaryzoo.org and search for summer camps in Events and Programs to find an online registration form.

Anderson says online is the easiest way for parents to sign their children up, but calling 403-232-9300 will also connect them to the right people.
