Winter Games merchandise a hot seller: Bay

Perhaps nowhere in Vancouver has Olympic fever been running as high as the sales floor of the Bay’s Olympic Superstore, where merchandise, particularly Canada’s Olympic Team apparel, has been flying off shelves.

The big sellers: Canada hoodies, plush Quatchi dolls and those ubiquitous red mittens — which have sold more than two million pairs across the country.

“Everybody wants a piece of the Olympics,” said Dana Hall, store director of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Superstore. “This is a way that is affordable for people and a way to feel proud.”
Capitalizing on nationalistic pride isn’t restricted to Canadians.

The Bay is expected to launch its “international village” today. The village, located on the fifth floor of its downtown flagship store, will sell the Olympic apparel of other countries, like Italy, Russia and Finland.
