Woman, unborn child killed in collision

A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed after she was struck by a car while waiting to cross a busy road in Abbotsford.

A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed after she was struck by a car while waiting to cross a busy road in Abbotsford.

The woman, who was six-months pregnant, was waiting on an elevated median at South Fraser Way and Ware Street with her husband and her father at 1 p.m. Saturday when the three pedestrians were hit by a Honda Prelude that careened onto the medium after colliding with a Ford F150 pickup.

They were rushed to hospital, but the woman and her unborn child died. Her husband and father remain in hospital and are receiving treatment, Abbotsford police said.

Police said the initial collision between the Prelude and F150 resulted in a series of collisions involving five vehicles. A sixth car was damaged when it was struck by debris from the Prelude.

In a release, Abbotsford Const. Ian MacDonald said collision reconstructionists were at the scene gathering evidence. He said it would be some time before the cause of the collision was determined and released.
