Where do you look when you’re too old to do the sketchy Craigslist housing gamble, but still not rich enough to spend $795 a night at the Four Seasons? For those of us in between, there’s the higher-end rental service Roomorama (www.roomorama.com).
The online residential marketplace for short-term rentals is based in New York, with communities established across the U.S. and around the world. The brainchild of two frequent travelers, this peer-to-peer service streamlines the short-term rental process and allows renters and hosts to have safety and security without totally breaking the bank. What’s better yet, renters get a feel for what it’s like to live in a specific city neighborhood, and experience a different style of living sans lease or purchase.
Of the New York listings, I love the properties held by the short-term rental king Toshi (aka Robert Chan). Toshi’s portfolio on Roomorama includes 84 listings of furnished apartments, lofts and suites with cable and Internet.
A little bit of Zen in Brooklyn
My absolute favorite is a two-bedroom “Zen garden” carriage house at 186 South Eighth St. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It lists at $3,950 a month for up to five tenants. It includes a cascading waterfall with a full barbecue area — cut flowers will cost you extra, though. Valet parking is available for $25 a day.
