‘Happy Endings’ for Elisha Cuthbert

Elisha Cuthbert stars as Alex in “Happy Endings,” premiering tonight at 9:31 on ABC.

Elisha Cuthbert is no stranger to TV audiences, even if her “24” character, Kim Bauer, isn’t exactly beloved by fans — something she understands, by the way. But with her new comedy series, “Happy Endings,” Cuthbert is excited to show off her funny side by starring as Alex, who begins the series by ditching her fiance at the altar.

Why does Alex dump Dave?

Alex is trying to figure that out. I don’t think it’s as simple as she’s completely done with the relationship.  … Sometimes we let things build and build, and unfortunately they break at the worst time. She probably should have just sat him down and had the conversation, but never did.

If you were friends with your character in real life, what would you say to her?

Oh, man. I’d be like, “You’re in trouble.” [Laughs] No, I mean, I would obviously want to hear her side of the story.

How did you get involved with this project?

I was talking a lot with everyone at ABC. I think they were more partial to me coming back to TV and doing drama, but I was really, really adamant about wanting to do comedy. And I just held out.

Were you desperate to try comedy after “24”? Was it a relief not to be kidnapped every other episode?

I did play a character that everyone really loved to hate. I think they even named me “Most Love-to-Hate Character” in TV Guide Magazine.

How did that feel?

I don’t hate her whatsoever, but I can understand the audience having that aggravation toward the storylines. So I was really excited to play someone that everyone would love. I’m not setting myself up for any quick loving — but I think she redeems herself.

How have you found comedy to be compared to drama?

It’s a lot more difficult, but so much more fun. You’ve got to be with people that are willing and ready to go to the comedy battle with you. With drama, you know your storyline and go in and execute it. But with comedy, you’re only as good as everyone else around you.
