Cheryl Cole: Can you understand the new ‘X Factor’ judge?
Today, America received a new challenge in our longstanding effort to ignore the world beyond our borders: Simon Cowell has confirmed that British singer Cheryl Cole will be a judge on his upcoming reality-show "X Factor." Americans have gotten used to most British accents — posh, Cockney, even Scottish — but odds are good we’ve never heard anything like Cole’s before.
Cole is a "Geordie," from the northeast of England, and is renowned even in her home country for having a nigh-impenetrable accent. The pop star is arguably the first Geordie to attempt to cross over into America, and our comprehension (or lack thereof) of her diction may prove to be the critical issue.
