Todd Haynes to direct “Dope,” Julianne Moore in talks to star

Todd Haynes on the set of "Mildred Pierce" with Kate Winslet.

As super fans of this year’s HBO mini-series “Mildred Pierce,” based on the 1941 James M. Cain novel, we are incredibly excited to say that Haynes has signed on to do another period drama for the premium cable channel – “Dope” based on the 2006 novel by Sara Gran. “Mildred” executive producers John Wells and Christine Vachon are also signed up to take on those roles for the new project.

This story, set in 1950′s New York City, as opposed to 1930′s and ’40s L.A. in “Pierce,” centers on a former heroin addict who turns to petty thievery and freelance detective work in order to make her way in the city. The Hollywood Reporter claims that Julianne Moore is “circling” the lead role, which, if she signed on for it, would add to her growing list of collaborations with Haynes, which include 2007′s “I’m Not There,” 2002′s “Far From Heaven” and 1995′s “Safe.”

We’ll next see Moore on HBO playing Sarah Palin in “Game Change.” When she was in town promoting “Crazy, Stupid, Love” the actress spoke a bit about how she prepared her best Palin impression.

“It was really challenging,” she said. “I read everything there was to read on her. I listened to her book on tape constantly. All I have on my iPod is Sarah Palin. My son’s like, WHAT?!? He’s like, mom, that’s so dumb. But that’s what you do – total immersion.”
