Mayer cancels due to throat

John Mayer had to cancel several upcoming performances after being diagnosed with granuloma, an inflamed nodule near his vocal chords, he wrote on his Tumblr blog recently. “The record will be released next year instead of this fall or winter,” Mayer says of his upcoming album. “This is a temporary setback, though I’m not sure how long or short a period of time it will be. I’ve got the best doctors in the country looking after me and I will be singing and touring again as soon as I get the all clear. Until then I’ll be spending time writing and composing more music and kicking an empty soup can around the West Village.”

Alec Baldwin’s Emmy drama

Alec Baldwin bowing out of the Emmys on Sunday had nothing to do with a tiff over Rupert Murdoch-related humor. The actor had allegedly refused to take part in a comedy sketch for the awards show after a joke he planned to make about the News of the World phone-hacking scandal was nixed by the show’s network, Fox. But Baldwin, who attended Tony Bennett’s birthday party in New York that night, insists that had nothing to do with it. “I skipped the Emmys because of this — because I wanted to be here,” he told People magazine. “The Emmys have been in August for the last several years, but they moved to this date and I’d already committed to this.” Baldwin said he planned to catch the awards show on YouTube the next day.

Emmy viewers down for 2011

Viewership for the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards fell 8 percent from last year to just over 12 million Americans who tuned in to watch Jane Lynch host the show, reports Reuters. If the early results from media research company Nielsen hold up, that would make Sunday’s Emmys on Fox one of the least viewed telecasts of the past five years. Last year, 13.5 million viewers tuned in. Lynch received mixed reviews.
