Affordable vegan options around the city

Victoria Moran

Eating vegan just got a whole lot easier — and much more affordable. While the cheapest way to eat vegan, says Victoria Moran, author of “Main Street Vegan,” is to make your own food, it’s not always possible to plan and prepare meals in advance. For those circumstances, she says that fast food is a legitimate option. She shares her New York favorites:

Maoz Vegetarian
This Middle Eastern fast-food chain has locations all over the city. The combination of falafel, salad and juices make it the perfect option for people on the go, Moran says.

Chipotle
Moran calls Chipotle “God’s gift to vegans.” A vegan burrito (or a burrito bowl for those who don’t want to eat wheat) is a healthy, satisfying lunch for under $10. As a bonus, Chipotle now offers brown rice.

Subway
When Moran lived in England, she ate many “salad sandwiches,” which she recreates at Subway. While a sandwich without cheese may be viewed as “just a whole lot of veggies on bread,” Moran says that the freshly baked whole wheat bread is really good.

Taco Bell
Moran’s rule for a Taco Bell bean burrito is simply “no cheese, add lettuce.”

The food truck trend goes vegan

Moran also points out that many food trucks across the city provide healthy, affordable vegan options. Standouts include:

NY Dosas: Located in Washington Square Park, Moran calls their menu “a New York miracle”?and says “coming out of this small space is an amazing array of food you would expect to find at an upscale restaurant.”

Moshe’s Falafel: According to Moran, Midtown Manhattan is the hardest place to find good vegan food. Moshe’s Falafel comes to the rescue with their vegan and kosher specialty falafel sandwiches served on 94 W. 46th St. and 10 E. 17th St. “Not only is it reasonably priced, but for the price you get a whole lot of food,” she says.
