Can we talk about Anne Hathaway in ‘Les Miserables’?

Sad, sad Anne Hathaway.

The new “Les Miserables” trailer hit the internet and many are stunned by the sweet, alluring sound of Anne Hathaway’s little theater geek heart getting broken to the tune of “I Dreamed a Dream” (a song made widely known in recent years due to Susan Boyle’s killer rendition on “Britain’s Got Talent”).

This is just the first taste of the film that’s set to be released at Christmas, so it’s not surprising that the only voice we hear is Ms. Hathaway’s.  The savvy people that cut this trailer together know their audience – women, almost only women, save some theater-loving gay men. So they also understand that the way to make those ticket-buyers gasp and say “I must see this film” is to play down the elements of war and revenge in order to emphasis the key entry point: heartbreak.

The main characters, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) and Javert (Russell Crowe) who are in 80 percent of the film — do you really want to know how much Anne Hathaway is actually in the film? No, we won’t tell you — don’t get as much air time, sure. But this is just the first pass. We can only hope to see another trailer, with Hugh Jackman singing the crap out of “Who Am I?”
